George Prior was born in Hertfordshire and moved to London where he married a widow Elizabeth Ann Snowden (nee Gotten). The family came to Australia with the Colonial Land and Emmigration Commission. They lived first at Bunbury before moving to Albany in 1860 where George became a cartage contractor.
