He arrived in Australia a year before his family. He took any work available - cutting sandalwood, prospecting and at the Big Bell Goldmine. When war broke out, he and his son were interned to Rottnest Island. Shortly after his son was released. He was assigned wo work for Man-power, first at Harvey then Jarrahdale. There he was able to visit his family on weekends. After the war, he did cement work. One of his jobs was laying cement around the war memorial at Kings Park in preparation for the Royal visit in 1954.
