Bookbinder by trade. Worked for Spicers and Detmold as guillotine operator from 1911 until 1927 in Fremantle. Started own business Pilpel Print in McLean's Lane 104 Murray Street Perth in 1927. Early days did all University of WA printing and calendars, as well as public exam papers.
