Helen was born into aristocracy in St Petersburg, Russia. She left for Belgrade, via Constantinople during the Russian Revolution. Her husband was killed during WWII. Helen and her 3 surviving children were in a refugee camp in Turin, before leaving on the last ship to Australia.
