Giuseppe Monastra arrived in Fremantle in 1964 to visit relatives. He returned to his home town in Sicily where he met and married Silvia Felice Barbuzza in 1968. They migrated to Australia in 1968 then became Australian Citizens. They have two children - Concettina, born 1972 and Mark, born 1975.
