Having gambled their money away on the voyage, James left Hettie Ethel on arrival. With toddler John (1910) and baby Ellen Crane (1912) to support, Hettie worked successfully as a seamstress, later owning her West Leederville home. James infrequently appeared leaving Hettie to riase three children alone (Ethyl Joyce 1919).
