Mary was an Irish needle woman who emigrated from Ireland to escape the harsh conditions following the Potato Famine. Mary worked for Slades on Glenavon, met Francis Hastings and married in 1855. They had 12 children.

  • Mary McPhail's sixth child, Mary Hastings b.1864 in Northam, produced a male child in 1881 named Alexander Francis McDermott who later adopted the surname Roberts after his mother married Thadius Roberts in Albany in 1884. Alexander Francis married Mary Ann Walker at Lyalls Mill, Collie on 7 June 1913.
