  • Recent family research has shown that much of what Margaret McKenzie said of her past was false ('she was a bit of a fibber', said one of her children). She was born Margaret Brownlie McGinty at Blantyre, Lanarkshire, on the 15th of February 1886. In the Scottish Census for 1901 her occupation is given as 'home help'. Betsy McKenzie was working as a waitress in Glasgow at the time and, presumably, there the two girls met and made their way to Australia. Margaret was certainly a hard worker and kept her family together during the hard times of the 1930s.
