Mate came to Australia to find a better life for his family. To qualify for settlement, he cut timber in the South-West. Later he bought a vineyard named Vignacourt in Middle Swan & started a winery. His eldest son Matt joined him in 1931 & his wife Lucija and two younger sons, Ivan and Mihovil arrived in 1933. His youngest son, Tony, was born at Vignacourt, Middle Swan.
