Luke's father, a fishing merchant, died May 1945. Seeking a better life, Luke set sail, 1st class, for Fremantle aged 19. He commenced working with the Kailis family earning enough money to enable his mum, Evangelia and sister, Nina to join him. They arrived Christmas Day, 1947 on the Misr.
