Joan Loader was 2 years of age when she was placed in the Barnardo Homes Orphanage in Exeter, UK. At 12 years of age she was sent to Fairbridge, Western Australia. She enlisted into the AWAS in 1942 and served in the searchlight division. She married Albert Allan Penberthy in 1948. Together they had a son and three daughters.
