The family is of Greek descent, whose parents & grandparents had migrated to South Africa from Greece as early as 1917. The Achille Lauro was formerly the Willem Ruys & had been a migrant vessel to Australia in the 1960's. The Achille Lauro's last trip to Australia ws in 1991 & she carired many migrants from South Africa to Australia.
