Herbert & Sophia Jones arrived in Albany from London on the Sophocles on 20th Oct 1925 with three of their children, Audrey 5, Douglas 3 & Kenneth 6 mths. From Albany they went to the Group Settlements of the Northcliffe area. Life was tough on the land & & they encountered many a hardship. Home was a shack without floorboards, no doors & water needed to be fetched from the creek nearby. A vegetable garden was soon planted to supply the family with fresh vegetables. They had little money so they needed to live off the land. By now there were 5 children. The only social life was a dance held regularly where the family gathered with others to make their own entertainment. Horse & cart was a common form of transport for these events. Some travelling many miles to attend. After approx 15 years of hardships the Jones family moved off the land & headed for life in the city (Perth) where they found life would still be tough . Also a 6th child was born making it 4 daughters & 2 sons. Herbert (Bertie) as he was known & the 2 boys joined the Australian Military Forces in WWII. Herbert passed away after the war ended. Sophia entered the workforce as a housekeeper at the age of 49 & retired at the age of 70. Although widowed for 44 years Sophia led a full life before she sadly passed away aged 93 years.
