Discharged from the British Army after WWI, Ernest came to Australia to start a new life. He met widow Rose Fowles, nee Kirkum, on the Orsova and they married. Together they were involved in Group Settlement in Serpentine and Margaret River but eventually returned to Fremantle. They had five children.
