Thomas sold his Army commission to bring his family to the colony. He had spent time in France between 1818 and 1827 and his children were all born in St Pierre Calais. Thomas farmed on the Canning River. At one time he was the postmaster there (also Resident Magistrate for the Canning). Sophia died in childbirth in 1830.
