While Robert Heppingstone did, indeed, serve in the British army under John Molloy, he was not at Waterloo. This claim has been passed down through the family, but military records do not bear it out.
Robert joined the army on the 1st of June 1815 and was marching toward training at Shorncliffe barracks when the war ended. He probably did get to watch the troop ships coming home, but he never fought in the Peninsular War. Most of his military career was spent quelling insurrections in Scotland and Ireland.
