Pavel Gavlak migrated from Czechoslovakia as a refugee by himself, leaving three sisters. Initially he worked as a labourer, then as a motor mechanic before having his own business, a service station in Beaconsfield for twenty years. He married Franca Canestrini and had one daughter Debra, and two granddaughters.
