Manuel (Garces or Gus) was one of a group of the first Portuguese migrants. He was a gifted child receiving a scholarship by the Catholic Church. Garces learned English quickly upon his arrival in Fremantle, helping others as a translator. He was a succesful crayboat skipper and owner.
