Born in Northern Ireland, W.M Galbraith joined the 89th. Reg. of foot in Belfast in 1844 aged 17 and was subsequently stationed Britain, Crimer, Malter, India and South Africa. At 21 he married Elizabeth Jane SM of PHET (17) in Londonderry in 1849. Four children accompanied WM & Elizabeth to W.A. in 1863 and five were born in WA. War Service caused health problems before and after migration as an enrolled pensioner guard.

  • My great grandfather was Robert Galbraith, born 1862 near York. He lists his father as James Galbraith, Pensioner and mother, Eliza Smirford. It appears to me that, Eliza is Eliza Smofphet indicated here.

  • I have a record of William Galbraith marrying Eliza Smorphet in Banagher, Kings County, Ireland 1st September 1849. William Galbraith was the brother of my GGG Grandfather James Galbraith, also of the 89th regiment of foot.

  • A little more information on William Galbraith. William is listed in the records for Chelsea Pensioners, he attested to the 89th Regiment of Foot in Belfast 1844 aged 17 and was discharged on medical grounds in Fermoy, County Cork in 1861. He was born in Magherafelt, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland and was son of Robert Galbraith.
