Times were tough. My mother, who had to rent a room in a house, thought she would see rows of houses in Fremantle like in Holland but she saw barren land. She missed her family. She was one of 15 children. My father used to paint wall plaques and he would put them in a suitcase and stand at the side of the road and hitch hiked to the country to sell the plaques.
