William Allan Edwards, his wife Gladys & their two children, William Hugh & Elizabeth Margaret Alison Edwards arrived in Fremantle on the Themistocles in May 1941. William Allan was born on 5 September, 1909 in Lancashire, England. He died on 7 August, 1995 & was cremated at Karrakatta, his ashes being scattered at Rottnest. He was a brilliant scholar, educated at Cambridge, & appointed to the Chair of Modern Languages at the University of Western Australia in 1941. He remained a Professor of English until he retired in 1974/5. He was highly respected for his influence on the University Art Collection &, particularly for his part in the acquisition of major paintings by Nolan.
