  • Ken Crook (my Dad) also was a volunteer for the Endeavour replica project. He worked as a night watchman. He was rewarded with the opportunity to sail on a trial run between Busselton (I think) and Fremantle. I remember his describing the difficult conditions of sleeping on hammocks. His interest continued when he arranged to be in England at Plymouth with us to see the Endeavour sail in. On that journey, the Endeavour had brought on board with it a number of old fashioned quilled letters, one penned to me by my parents as I was living in the UK at that time. After no success in finding an Endeavour kit in Australia, we finally found one for over Great British Pounds 300! My father spent hundreds of hours creating, researching and decorating the model. It was used at the centerpiece of his coffee display when he died and his eulogy focused on the word"Endeavour", with the strange coincidence of his work as a Senior Engineering Draftsman on the oil rig Ocean Endeavour.
When my mother passes, there will be a collection including the model, a selection of photographs of Dad making the model, the letter sent to the UK port of Plymouth) on the Endeavour Replica, photographs of Dad on board at Plymouth (one where he is taking a beating from the Cat o' nine tails. I also have some of his reference books. I will write to you properly about this. I would like to know if the museum would be interested in this collection when Mum passes. I promised my Dad that I would attempt to make this happen.
