Derek, a member of the Merrymakers Concert Party in London and holding medals as a Mezzosoprano, performed during the voyage concerts. Arriving at Fremantle he was interviewed by the press. He subsequently sang at Guildford and when older performed on Young Australia broadcasts, ABC Recitals and Stairway to the Stars on TV7
