As 1938 saw anti-semitism threaten Polish Jewry, Leja married Chona then migrated alone to Perth, sponsored by an aunt. Leja followed in 1939. Leja's family were all killed in WWII. Australia gave her the opportunity to have a family of her own and live a peaceful life.
