Initally settled in Northam, residing with his older brother (Ante) and wife. Worked as a butcher and on weekends played competitive soccer. After a few years left Northam to travel around Australia (working holiday). Soon returned to Perth and settled locally. Married Olga (nee Sardelich) in 1968 and has two daughters.
