Jekabs and his family fled Latvia to Germany living in a displaced person's camp for five years. They built their new life on a small farm at Waroona. Jekabs died of tetanus and Velta alone raised three young children. Velta died in 1991. Ieva, Janis and Ruth became school teachers.
