In Ceylon civil service, Carl was asked to consider governorship of Hongkong but with growing unrest in region, retired to migrate with family to Western Australia. When war declared joined army with eldest son, and wife Enid and eldest daughter volunteered in Nursing Emergency Service/Red Cross. Other children attended Claremont State and Infant Schools
