Derrick came to Australia under the auspices of the Salvation Army with Farming Ticket 2195. In 1937 he married Nancy Christina Clifton (from Australind WA) and subsequently lived in Bridgetown, Bunbury and Perth. They had 4 children - Hugh, Michael, Patricia (Mitchelmore) and Jennifer (Fischer).
