Education

The A Day in Pompeii exhibition provides a variety of opportunities for schools to integrate into classroom programs, including topics as varied as ancient cultures, volcanoes, natural disasters, art and archaeology.

The Museum will be offering self-guided education resources and exclusive teacher-only events related to the exhibition. Further details will be available soon.

School Excursions

The following charges apply for schools visiting the A Day in Pompeii exhibition:

  • Students on school excursions (K-12) : $10.00 per student
  • Additional adults above 1:10 ratio: $20.00

To assist schools with providing adequate supervision for students, the following free entry rules apply:

  • One adult free per ten students
  • One free adult assisting a student with special needs

Please note:

  • All school bookings must be paid for in advance, either by credit card or by invoice.
  • You will be able to make arrangements for payments (cash or cheque only) or refunds for additional or missing students or adults upon arrival at the Museum.

Important Exhibition Information

A Day in Pompeii is on display at the Western Australian Museum – Perth (Perth Cultural Centre, James Street, Perth) from 21 May - 5 September 2010.

As we expect higher than usual visitation to the Museum to view the A Day in Pompeii exhibition, it is essential that all teachers, students and adult helpers are familiar with exhibition rules and safety information before entering.

Please note that large groups may be split up as we need to manage capacity for this exhibition.

All school visits to the A Day in Pompeii exhibition are self-guided and comprise of two components.

  • 3D Movie experience
    • Your class/es will be allocated a specific time/s to view the 3D movie. Your class/es must enter at your booked time.
    • Your class/es must be waiting in the Museum’s main foyer at least 10 minutes prior to their allocated session.
    • Students who arrive late for their allocated session will not be admitted.
    • If your entire group is unable to make your allocated session, we will endeavour to accommodate them in an alternate time slot. Please note that due to expected high visitation, this may not be possible.
    • Please allow approximately 10 minutes for the viewing of the 3D movie.
  • A Day in Pompeii exhibition
    • Immediately following your 3D movie experience, your group is scheduled to visit the A Day in Pompeii exhibition.
    • Please split your class/es into small groups of no more than ten students. Each group should be allocated an adult leader.
    • Please allow 45 minutes to view the exhibition.

 

Please note the following important exhibition rules:

  • No food or drink is allowed
  • No photography is allowed
  • No pens, pencils or other writing implements are allowed inside the gallery
  • Students must be supervised at all times
  • Be respectful of displays and ‘no touching’ signage where it is present
  • Be respectful of other Museum visitors, and remind students to use ‘quiet voices’
  • No running
  • The exhibition contains body casts of some of the Pompeii victims. Although these are not human remains, it is the responsibility of the class teacher to decide whether viewing these is appropriate for their group

Important Museum Information

Your group/s are welcome to explore the remainder of the Museum’s galleries before or after viewing the A Day in Pompeii exhibition. We recommend that teachers become familiar with the Museum’s layout and collections by visiting the Museum prior to their excursion date.

Facilities
There are toilets and a drink fountain located in the passageway leading from the main foyer. Other facilities are located throughout the Museum.

Lunches and Bags
Due to space limitations and expected high visitation resulting from this exhibition, please note the following:

  • Please have students leave their bags at school, and have all lunches packed in large plastic crates.
  • There are spaces to have lunch or recess breaks on the grassed areas outside the Museum or in the paved courtyard within the Museum grounds.
  • Please note that many of our usual undercover spaces will be unavailable for schools to eat their lunch in the event that it is raining. Please consider using undercover spaces located within the Perth Cultural Centre.
  • No food or drink can be consumed in the Museum’s galleries.

Access
Please notify our staff if any students have specific access requirements, including students in wheelchairs.

Photography
Cameras can be used in all galleries except for Katta Djinoong and A Day in Pompeii. We encourage you to take photos so that your class can reflect on their experience.

Private Transport
A Coach Stand for drop-off / pick-up of students is located on Beaufort Street, approximately 50 metres north of the Roe Street intersection. The City of Perth does not provide bus parking facilities within the city’s boundaries. For further information contact the City of Perth Parking Team on 1300 889 613.

Discount for WACOT members

Western Australian College of Teaching members receive a 10% discount for A Day in Pompeii merchandise upon presentation of a valid membership card. College members already benefit from an ongoing 10% discount available at all Museum shops.
