SOUVENIR LIFEBUOY

Lifebuoy has cloth tape wrapped around it in four places, which divides it into four equally sized sections. On the front the tape has been painted to resemble flags, each of which is diagonally divided into four and painted different colours : blue, white, red and yellow. On the back the tape has been painted white. The top and bottom sections of the lifebuoy formed by the placement of the tape have been painted red and the sides are white. The following is painted in white letters : 'STRATHEDEN / P & O ' (top section) and 'LONDON 1961' (bottom section). There is a flag and the top of a flagpole painted on each side formed by the tape. The Union Jack is on the left and the same red, white blue and yellow on the right. The back of the life buoy is painted in the same way as the front, with the red at the top and bottom, and the white at the sides. White cord is attached at each tape point and bulges out until it is pulled in by the next tape point. This was found in the collection with a P. and O. souvenir packet of matches. (See H89/744)
