SOUVENIR FLAG

H1988.680

Flag souvenir from the W.A Museum Expedition to Depuch Island and other adjacent areas in the Dampier Archipelago in 1962. White cotton flag with various drawings in black ink. Working "WA MUSEUM EXPEDITION 1962 / DEPUCH, DOLPHIN LEGENDRE, WEST LEWIS, ANGEL, GIDLEY, ROSEMARY, ENDERBY". The expedition consisted of 10 people, specialists in different fields, including artist Frank Norton, who may have made the flag. The aim of the Expedition was to record the distribution & details of all aboriginal engravings on the island and search for carvings not previously recorded, also to survey the flora & fauna on the islands. The drawings on the flag are probably representative of the aims and results of the expedition. The figure of the wallaby in the centre of the flag is identical to an aboriginal engraving found at Hunter's Pool, Depuch. The 2 stick figures are also similar to aboriginal engravings. The lizard may represent a gecko found by the zoologist.
