Small, cylindrical, white glass with metal (aluminium?) lid, white, yellow, red and black paper label, ‘WATKINS/ MUSTARD-ON’, jar. Label reads (Left panel); ‘DIRECTIONS./ An external applica-/ tion in many cases of/ Coughs, Colds in the/ Chest, Spasmodic/ Croup, Rheumatic/ Pains, Neuralgia, Sore/ Joints and Muscles./ Apply to affected parts,/ rubbing briskly until/ entirely absorbed. For/ children, dilute with/ Watkins Pomade or/ lard.’ Centre panel; TRADE MARK/ 1.75 OZ. NET WEIGHT/ J.R. Watkins (cursive)/ WATKINS/ MUSTARD-ON/ THE J.R. WATKINS COMPANY/ MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA/ MONTREAL WINNIPEG VANCOUVER’. Right panel; ‘DIRECTIONS./ Watkins Mustard-On is/ highly preferable to/ the old-fashioned mus-/tard plaster poultice or/ turpentine and lard,/ because of the com-/bination of valuable/ and active medicinal/ agents which it con-/tains. It is easier to/ apply, does not/ blister. It acts as a/ counter-irritant, and/ thereby helps to reduce/ superficial congestion/ and irritation.’ Left and right panels are bright yellow, central panel has white background with red ‘WATKINS’ text, with ‘MUSTARD-ON’ in bright yellow, all other text black. Tin lid has rounded top, with ‘Watkins’ embossed in cursive in centre. Jar has two lips, at top and bottom, with ‘C/M/15’ embossed/stamped into glass/plastic on base. Some dirty marks on paper label, but largely unmarked. Tin lid opens, original seal in place over ointment inside.
