BOTTLE, Case Gin

H1989.1062

Tapered, square case gin bottle with square shoulders and a round neck. The lip is imperfectly formed, this traditionally allowed for heavy wax sealing over the cork stopper but this bottle has 2 patches of metal 1cm long at their widest points, still adhering to the neck. The shape facilitated transport in ships and jolting wagons; bottles were packed in wooden cases, one bottle on top of another in pairs with straw between, each pair seperated by a wooden partition, a dozen to a case. This bottle is olive green and has 2 side seams. Down one side the letters "J.D.K.Z' are inscribed but there is no chain and anchor, commonly associated with this brand. What could be the remains of the seal is inside the bottle. A masking tape label on the base reads: 'H. BOUCHER/ 4/79 PCS'.
