PUPPET SCRAPBOOK

H1989.555

Scrapbook containing newspaper and magazine articles about puppet shows. Those which have been glued in relate to Peter Scriven's Tintookies. There is also information about doll sales, doll making workshops, a newsletter from the British Puppet and Model Theatre Guild dated August, 1961, and a list of puppet and doll groups. There is also a sheet of paper with instructions for making a 'Weale Lancaster Marionette', which appears similar in design to some from her collection. There is a worn four page pamphlet by Patchwork Puppet Plays with the play Forest Meeting by John Reynolds. The characters are a Russian peasant and Death, a ghost. There is a sheet with 'Prologue' at the top containing an introduction for a play, unnamed or described, but the introduction is by a duck who tries to remember what the play is called and ends up simply saying how good it is. It appears to be a carbon copy written out by hand. Thirdly there is the play 'Rapunzel' typed on green paper under the heading 'The National Fitness Council of Victoria / Voluntary Leader Training Course in Puppetry / August, 1947' In total there are 31 loose sheets. The scrapbook is a Spirax Sketch Book No 579. In the top right hand corner of the cover 'Puppet Scrapbook' is written in blue ink and '4/6' in pencil. On the label in the centre 'F.Rogers Puppets' is written in biro. The entire collection of marionettes and puppets, which includes 31 marionettes, 26 hand puppets (glove and rod), 20 puppet heads, 9 hand sticks, 3 stick dolls and a travelling stage, were used, and many were made, by Miss Frances Rogers. Miss Rogers, born on 19 Oct 1904, went to teacher's college in 1930 and joined the Education Department of WA in 1934. Between 1934 and her retirement in 1967, she taught at various country schools, took special classed for deaf and dumb children in Mosman Park, and classes for mentally and physically disabled children in Leederville. She used the the disabled children.
