SERVING MALLET
H1988.36
Serving mallet like a rounded mallet except that it has a groove along the top, used for binding a splice, or protecting a length of rope with close runs of spun yarn; it tensions the spun yarn. Belonged to Captain Albert Edward Gilmore who came to Australia in 1877 as a result of the wreck of the HADDA. Gilmore was the recipient of a gold medal, certificate and letter from the Mayor and townspeople of Geraldton for bravery shown in rescue work at the wreck of the "Windsor" (1908). He was Harbour Master at the time. See R.A. Salaman Dictionary of Tools pp 403 & 404.
