BOILER FOR TRIPLE EXPANSION STEAM MARINE ENGINE

T1970.958.b

Letter from C. Beilby 12 May 78. Original castings probably produced by Mr Stuart Turner Ltd (Henley, U.K.). This model however has steam transfer pipes disposed on pumps side of cylinder block. Not a true scale model of any particular prototype but embodying salient features of 2 types developed about 1876 for use in torpedo boats. In effort to improve power \ weight ratio heavy cast or fabricated. A frames supporting cylinders replaced, in this design, with turned steel columns. Power \ weight ratio greatly improved from 300lb \ HP to 50lb \ HP, but imbalance in design caused excessive vibrations and breakages at high speed.
