CHILD'S FROCK
CH1970.57
Grey linen, all hand-sewn, hand-smocked and embroidered in feather and daisy stitch. These were common were for country boys throughout the C19th and were sometimes used as pinafores by wealthy children.
Addition 19.1.90:
Appears to be a copy of an adult's smock for a child, when smocks were beginning to be fashionable. Not designed to be worn for warmth and protection, like traditional smocks. Information from Margaret Herzfeld, smocker.
