Fourline Cardinalfish
Ostorhinchus doederleini
Pinkish to pearly white with four brown lines extending from head to tail. There is a black spot on the caudal peduncle (base of tail). Reach about 14 cm.
Morphology
Distinguished by the following combination: dorsal fin rays VII-I, 9; anal fin rays II, 8; pectoral fin rays 15; pelvic fin rays I, 5; pored lateral line scales 24; predorsal scales 3; circumpeduncular scales 12.
Evolution
Most diverse genus of cardinalfishes (Apogonidae) with 93 species.
Behaviour
Nocturnal. Hides in caves and under ledges during the day. Feeds on invertebrates. Solitary.
Method of reproduction
Pair up during spawning season. Like all species of cardinalfishes it is a paternal mouthbrooder in which the male carries the fertilised eggs in his mouth. One mass may contain about 10,000 eggs and is incubated for 5 to 17 days depending on water temperature.
Habitat
Marine
Marine. coastal rocky reefs to around 10m deep.
Distribution
Japan to Taiwan and Australia and Kermedec Islands.
