Axos flabelliformis

Erect, digitate branching sponge, red or orange alive, specialised conules over smooth surface, oscules not apparent, texture firm, incompressible, with axial condensation. Characterised microscopically by presence of euasters with tylote endings and profusely microspined.

Morphology

Erect branches with axial stalk, difficult to differientiate from A. cliftoni except for microsclere complement.

Behaviour

Sessile filter feeder.

Method of reproduction

Sexual with larvae.

Habitat

Marine

Reported as widespread throughout north western Australia.

Distribution

North western Australia from Gnarloo, southern Ningaloo to southern Kimberley.
