Long British 1842 pattern percussion .753 smooth bore muzzle loading musket. Steel smoothbore round barrel. Steel percussion side lock and hammer on R.H. side. Lockplate stamped with a crown over 'V-R/ TOWER 1849' and to the right front of the lockplate, a smaller stamped acceptance mark: a crown descending to a broad arrow.Two brass 'Lovell's sidenail cups' for lockplate screws on L.H.side. Barrel secured by three flat barrel keys and upper swivel screw. Fixed V notched block backsight on barrel. Barrel top near lock stamped with row of three Birmingham contractor marks (crown over B and a number):' B5/ B9/ B9' To the left of these on side are three more stamped marks: acceptance mark 'LT'/ Brimingham contractor mark 'B7'/acceptance mark. Brass furniture including oval trigger guard and foreend and butt plate and three ramrod tubes. Lovell's bayonet catch between ramrod and muzzle for attaching bayonet (usually a 17 inch socket bayonet with long triangular blade) Ramrod appears shorter than regulation issue, possibly a substitute (??). Two sling swivels, one mounted from triggerguard (missing), the other above front ramrod tube. Wooden stock stamped mark:' I.O.R./8/1856' (?last numeral obscure) and a feint stamped mark: 80 bisected with a rising broad arrow.
