BRACE, Spring Latch

T1985.103.a-b

a) Cast steel. Probably had lignum head as illustrated in Salaman 'Dictionary of Tools' p. 97, fig. f. Spring latch chuck. The spring chuck, with a latch actuated by a button or lever, was introduced towards the end of the 18th century using interchangeable notched bits (p.90-92). These type of brace were still being used up to the beginning of this century (pp.75 & 77).
Bits: b & c) Shell with spoon mouth p. 84
d-h) Nose p. 83.
i) Rinder, half round (p. 83).
j) Centre - 'Thos. Ibbotson & Co. (p.78).
k-l) Countersinks - 'Thos. Ibbotson & Co' & 'Duck' (p.79) respectively.
It appears as though the bits have been notched. l) Not notched.
