DOCUMENT, Troopship News, WWII, souvenir issue, with handwritten letter Raymond Johnson

H2015.57

Four folded foolscap paper pages form a souvenir edition of the 'Troop/Ship/News' with a cover drawing by R. OGDEN. Inside it states it is Vol. 1 No. VI. Commanding Officer Colonel Charles C. Lamb, Ship Captain Ernest M. Fall, Commodore of the Convoy, A/Captain R. C. Garsia, R.A.N.

The troopship was the 'Queen Elizabeth' which had been converted to be a troop carrier in Singapore between November 1940 and February 1941. Departing Singapore as a troopship in February 1941 she initially carried Australian troops to operating theatres of war in Asia and Africa. The Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Mary were used as troopships as their high speeds allowed them to outrun hazards, mostly German U-boats, and they could therefore travel without a convoy. During her service as a troopship, Queen Elizabeth carried more than 750,000 troops.

A hand-written letter in black ink is on the blank reverse side of the cover, dated 27th Nov 41: 'Dear Mavis,/I'm scribbling a note on this/news hoping it + the parcel reaches you in/time for Xmas./When I have made the parcel ready for/posting I intend writing you by air/mail./Well darling I hope you like this/little gift as it's all I can find around/here to buy for the moment as we/haven't yet had any leave./I wish you + all the family a most/merry Xmas + a happy new year./My most Sincere Love/Raymond'
