POSTCARD, World War 1

H1999.212

World War One postcard. Sepia toned studio photograph of young soldier wearing leather leggings, Driver Joseph Jackson AIF (No. 1784) with hands behind his back. His battalion colour patch is visible on the right shoulder of his tunic. This is the early version colour patch of the 51st Battalion. Half the members of this Battalion when founded in 1916 were veterans from 11th Battalion. The newly designated colour patch for the 51st was the horizontal 11th Battalion badge of brown over light blue, turned vertically. Later they were issued with a more distinct circular patch of the same colour with brown over light blue. Printed in black ink on reverse "Joe/22/1/17". Receiving curator, Phyl Brown, has written incorrect notes on back of card in black crayon "Cousin/Archie Ritchie/Killed France/1915". This is untrue, given original signature of "Joe". Photograph is also different to photograph of Archie in H99.211, which was annotated by Lida Downey. (See provenance field for a detailed description of Joseph Jackson's military service)
