BOTTLE, Phenyle

H1992.23

Brown glass bottle with red and white label reading "FELTONS / SOLUBLE / PHENYLE / DEODORANT / THIS PREPARATION IS A / DISINFECTANT & GERMICIDE / ANTISEPTIC". The capacity is marked as "24 FL. OZS. NET" and bottled by "FELTON GRIMWADE & BICKFORD PTY. LTD. / PERTH AUSTRALIA". The instructions advise that one tablespoon when mixed with two quarts of water form a deodorant for flushing sinks and drains, for lavatories, bedroom utensils, dog kennels and fowl runs, stables and outhouses and areas in homes, schools and offices. Bottle was part of the original stock for the "Russell Watson's Pharmacy" opened in 1956 when there were still a few older homes with an "outside dunny". The "Night-Cart Man" came once or twice a week; phenyle, with its strong disinfectant smell, was widely used - as much for its value as a deodorant as for disinfectant properties. See H92/0024.
