CUPBOARD, Kerosene box

H1990.56

Dark green painted cupboard constructed from 6 kerosene boxes laid lengthwise in 2 stacks, 3 atop the other. 4 lengths of timber 9cm wide have been nailed down each side and extended 10cm to form the legs. A frame of timber has been nailed around the front, securing the boxes and providing a base to whichcupboard doors were once attached. On the left hand side are 2 unpainted sections and some nails to show where hinges have been, and on the right, 2 broken and rusty hinge stumps. A small cup hook has been fastened to the front of the frame near the centre of the cupboard and a piece of metal protrudes between the 2 middle boxes, possibly a means by which the doors were secured. Timber has been nailed across the base of the unit for added stability. There is a handle 7.5cm long on the left side which sevres no obvious purpose. The unit is solid and comprises 6 shelves, each 49cm long, 24cm high and 35cm deep. From its appearance, the unit has been recently used for storage in a shed or garage.
