GLOVE PUPPET, Goat

Puppet is made from grey felt. It has a head, body and four legs. The glove is a cylinder of felt attached to the belly of the animal, enabling the hand to fit inside the body and manipulate the legs. The animal is upright when the glove has the open end facing down. Head - Has painted black nose and mouth, large yellow splotches, one yellow eye with black pupil, one painted black pupil. The right ear points up and had a fawn felt inner ear. The left ear points down, and has a yellow splotch painted on its bottom edge. The horns are attached to the top of the head. They are made of wire covered in plastic tubing, and wrapped with white wool.They are long and curving. Where they attach to the head a tussock of shorter wool is attached. More wool is attached under the chin. Body - Hoofs are painted dark blue, large splotch down right front leg. Short felt tassel for tail. Ends of legs are stuffed. Ring attached to bottom of glove. The entire collection of marionettes and puppets, which includes 31 marionettes, 26 hand puppets (glove and rod), 20 puppet heads, 9 hand sticks, 3 stick dolls and a travelling stage, were used, and many were made, by Miss Frances Rogers. Miss Rogers, born on 19 Oct 1904, went to teacher's college in 1930 and joined the Education Department of WA in 1934. Between 1934 and her retirement in 1967, she taught at various country schools, took special classed for deaf and dumb children in Mosman Park, and classes for mentally and physically disabled children in Leederville. She used the puppets as teaching aids for the disabled children.
