Inscriptions: Signed, not dated, "G.C. Benson", lower left corner. Title on mount: "Jail Gates Rottnest", in pencil. Subject Matter: Jail gates but possible the salt house. Biography: George Courtney Benson born 4 February 1886 in Melbourne, died 1960. Training: National Gallery, Melbourne and London. Came to WA in 1931 to design and paint the ceiling of Winthrop Hall. Member of the Perth Society of Artists.
