Back: remains of label: "R. / Jackson & Sons / Printsellers / Picture frame makers / 3 Slater Street ..." Subject Matter: Group of nine sheep on grassy hillside. Biography: Born 1803 died 1902. Member of Royal Academy. An animal painter. Sheep and cattle were his constant subjects. Regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy. After about 1870, his commissions were so lucrative he was tempted to yield to facile repetition of favourite themes. Though only toward the end of his life did the quality of his work decline.
