GLASS SHEPHERDS' CROOKS -6-

CH1970.329

Crooks made in Perth, Scotland by Moncrieffs' Glass Works. Probably manufactured by a Belgian glass blower approx. 70 years ago. Compton refers to tradition in Devon of glass in shape of walking sticks, twisted & used in houses. Wiped clean every morning - believed to attract diseases. Noticed by George Soane in Devon. "The most curious of their general superstitions is that of the glass rod, which they set up clean in their houses, & wipe clean every morning, under the idea that all diseases from malaria will gather about the rod innoxiously. It is twisted in the form of a walking stick, & is from 4 to 8 feet long.
