LONGCASE CLOCK

CH1970.1071

From register: English Grandfather clock, 1822. Case of carved oak. Made Swan, Margate. Clock strikes on the hour and the dial shows a fishing boat at sea and the days of the month. It runs for 8 days and keeps accurate time. March 1982 : A Mr J.G. Craddock of Blandford, Dorset, an amateur horologist, says the movement is much earlier that the case (dated 1822). He says on stylist grounds - hands, chapter ring, spandrels dolphins, etc - he would date the movement at 1730 ca. "The bobbing yacht seems to be later" - it is Ken Buller made in 1975!! Mr Jim Jukes (Honorary Associate) viewed the clock 27 Sep 82 and thinks it is late in the C18th. He considers the spandrels too crudely made to be earlier. On examining the face, the maker's name is written as Wm. Dowell (not Mc as previously recorded). Previous Art Gallery. Reg. , p 318, no. 21. SUBFILE alteration sheet
